Gartner Magic Quadrant for Business Intelligence Platforms and Analytics Platforms

This report presents a snapshot of how vendors perform in a market segment with the goal of helping end users make better informed decisions about companies they may be looking to partner with, or whose services or products they may want to purchase.

In this edition the Gartner report starts: "Data discovery capabilities are dominating new purchasing requirements, even for larger deployments, as alternatives to traditional BI tools. But 'governed data discovery' — the ability to meet the dual demands of enterprise IT and business users — remains a challenge unmet by any one vendor.".

The report foresaw 2014 as follows: “It is very likely that 2014 will be a critical year in which the task of making "hard types of analysis easy" for an expanded set of users, along with ensuring governance, scale and performance for larger amounts of diverse data, will continue to dominate BI market requirements. At the same time, the ability to bridge widely proliferating business user silos with enterprise deployments will be a crucial challenge for IT and BI vendors. With the added complexities introduced by new data sources (such as the cloud, real-time events and sensors, and multi structured data) and new types of analysis (such as link/network and sentiment analysis, and new algorithms for machine learning), new opportunities will emerge to build business value. Leaders of BI initiatives to identify and optimize these opportunities will be under more pressure than ever to deliver results.”.

Data Warehousing

Data warehouses are the recognised foundation for enterprise analytics. They enable an organization to bring together cleansed data from separate sources of input, both internal and external, such as from partners or suppliers. Instead of garbage in, garbage out information to support decision-making, a consistent and consolidated enterprise-wide view of data from a business provides the foundation to improve your business. Building upon a trusted information platform for analytics is a key contributor to long-term business health. Not only do data warehouses enable higher quality information, they are designed to enable high-performance data access for analytic style applications. The develop of the Data Warehouse can be done over any database management system: Microsoft SQL Server, Oracle, IBM DB2, Sybase, FoxPro, Linter, Microsoft Access, MySQL, PostgreSQL, SQLite, etc. In South West Business Intelligence we use the worldwide recognised Ralph Kimball’s methodology delivering standard solutions to all our clients.

Extracting, transforming and loading your data is a key stage in building the foundation of your Business Intelligence solution. Whether it be bulk loads, real time feeds, creating historic snapshots and general data cleansing we can help. Our team have a wealth of experience with all the major ETL tools, this includes Informatica SAP Data Services Microsoft SSIS IBM Cognos Data Manager Talend well as stored procedures, cron jobs and general file loads.

The Microsoft Office package is available in most organisation and has a very low licensing cost. Excel, Word, Outlook, Power Point can be powerful Business Intelligence tools for start-ups, small and medium sized companies. Combined with Visual Basic for Applications (VBA), SQL and other technologies the Microsoft Office suite allows you to automatise work, generate reports, deliver it by email, analyse data, forecast and perform most common task of any Business Intelligence platform. The solutions can go from a simple Excel file to a more comprehensive alternative such as a Data Warehouse. If a database needs to be implemented, Microsoft Access offers a budget solution. For a more robust but still affordable database a Microsoft SQL Server would be recomended.
